TV actress celebrates birthday by planting trees

TV actress Julie Hesmondhalgh, who lives in Tameside, celebrated her 50th birthday by planting 50 trees at Copperas Field in Droylsden.

Julie (pictured), who lives in Broadbottom and made her name as Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street, stayed all day working alongside volunteers from Greenspace and the City of Trees initiative, who added a further 350 trees to bring the total to 400.

She said: "I wanted to mark my 50th birthday by doing something meaningful to me, for my community and the world, so what better way to spend it than planting 50 trees, one for every year I’ve spent on this beautiful planet, in Tameside, the place I call home?"

The event is to feature in a future BBC Radio 4 programme about the way people choose to spend their birthdays.
