The return of the Tameside HACK

Young people will have the opportunity to put their digital skills to the test as an innovative technology event returns to Tameside next week.

The highly popular Tameside HACK comes back for the seventh time on 18 February at Tameside College, and spaces are still available for young people to attend.

The two-day event, organised as part of Tameside Council’s “Every Child a Coder” pledge, is a fun competition to test and challenge digital skills and creativity.

The hackathon will raise aspirations for young people by encouraging them to get involved in coding and computing; areas where jobs are expected to grow at double the rate of other occupations over the next three years.

HACK7 will give the young people taking part the chance to develop their coding and computing skills. Whether they’re beginners or more experienced in coding there will be support from volunteer mentors from a diverse range of digital organisations.

Business sponsors will set challenges for the hackers who will then have two days to come up with a product or solution to fit the challenge brief.

Participants can attend as a team or they can form one on the day and make new friends. All Hackers will receive a Tameside Hack goodie bag and lunch on both days.

The previous event was the biggest ever HACK competition, with three times as many available places as the previous Tameside hackathon. It also saw more girls attending than ever before along with greater representation from Tameside schools and colleges.

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council Executive Member for Lifelong Learning, said: “Tameside HACK is a fantastic event which continues to help young people across the borough achieve exciting career opportunities in the digital industry. I’m proud to see more girls attending these events than ever before and greater representation from schools and colleges across Tameside.”
