Teenager dies after being rescued from canal

A teenager has sadly died in hospital after he was rescued from a canal in Droylsden yesterday evening (Wednesday).

Emergency services were called to Fairfield Lock just before 6pm.

Fire crews used specialist equipment to pull the 15-year-old boy, whose age hasn't yet been released, from a section of the Ashton Canal - close to Buckley Street.

He was then taken to hospital, where he later passed away.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 5.57pm, two fire engines, a technical response unit and the water incident unit from Eccles were mobilised to Buckley Street in Droylsden to reports of someone in the water.

"Upon arrival, the casualty was rescued from the water and taken to hospital by the North West Ambulance Service. We were there approximately one hour."
