Tameside's home-grown talent to spread festive cheer with free live concert

Tameside Music Service is set to spark festive cheer with their first live performance in nearly two years.

The afternoon of free live music for the whole community will feature performances from Tameside’s finest young musicians – and plenty of mince pies!

The seasonal event will take place at their new home on Birch Lane in Dukinfield, on Sunday 5 December from 1pm to 3pm.

Their first live performance since the pandemic started in March 2020, it will include traditional brass bands and carols alongside music from the worlds of pop and film.

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, said: “It’s wonderful that the talented young musicians from Tameside Music Service are able to perform live in front of an appreciative audience once again.

“I can’t wait for this fantastic event, which will bring people together to get everyone in the festive mood and spread some seasonal cheer. I hope as many people as possible will come along to join in the fun.”

Kate Campbell-Green, Head of Tameside School Music and Library Services, said: “We are all so pleased to be back making music together. The last few months have shown us how important music is for connecting people and communities and combatting social isolation and so we’re especially glad that we can offer our local community the chance to experience live music on their doorsteps this year.”

TMS moved online during the pandemic to ensure that the borough’s young musicians could still hone their skills. Their ‘TMS At Home’ initiative featured live music lessons for children that their family could join in with.

Last year, TMS held the Big Christmas Sing, a community-boosting carol concert performed by home-grown talent that was broadcast on Tameside Radio with song sheets distributed and residents invited to sing along.

They’re delighted to be able to perform in front of an audience this year, with the festive concert taking place at Tameside Music Centre, 289 Birch Lane, Dukinfield, SK16 5AU. As an outdoor event, it’s advised to dress for the weather.

TMS will be continuing the festive fun on social media up until the big day, with news from partners at The Hallé, Chetham’s, and RNCM and behind the scenes updates from students and teachers. Follow #tmsatchristmas.
