Tameside scoops Markets Team of the Year

Tameside's Markets Team has won a prestigious national award for developing opportunities while supporting traders and shoppers during the pandemic.

The Tameside Council service scooped the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) Market Team of the Year Award (Large Market).

The latest award follows the service winning the MJ Award for Innovation in Property and Asset Management in 2020.

As well as ensuring that Tameside’s markets were organised and delivered in line with Covid-safe requirements, the team realigned their priorities by placing added emphasis on supporting businesses, including working outside of the traditional operating hours to assist with grant applications, signposting businesses to other support packages, and developing an order, collect, and delivery system to ensure that services remained available to shoppers including key workers and the vulnerable, which in some instances saw staff delivering essential goods themselves into the early evening.

Tameside’s Markets Team also identified and developed service improvement opportunities. The markets introduced new and user friendly websites and apps for both Ashton and Hyde Markets. An online bookings and collections system was developed and introduced, streamlining the processes connected to market trading for both traders and the management team.

Recognising that town centres would need to change and that vibrant and well-organised activity would help boost trade coming out of the pandemic, the team created a programme of events resulting in the introduction of Ashton Artisan Market, The Stalybridge Street Feast, and other family themed events such as Dino Day, Sci-Fi Spectacular, and the Vintage Car Shows.

Councillor Allison Gwynne, Tameside Council’s executive member for neighbourhood services, said: “Congratulations to our fantastic Markets Team for this well-deserved award. The team has gone above and beyond to make sure our businesses and shoppers have remained supported throughout the pandemic.

“And despite all the difficulties and challenges that coronavirus has caused, they have continued to develop opportunities with Ashton Artisan Market and Stalybridge Street Feast proving hugely popular attractions that have brought in visitors and put the markets on the map.”
