Tameside Rotary's Santa Sleigh raises amazing total

Tameside Rotary Club is celebrating its best Santa Sleigh fundraising tour ever after amassing an amazing £8,000 and is thanking local residents for their incredible generosity.

The Rotary Santa Sleigh toured the streets of Ashton from December 9 last month in the Christmas countdown and was also based at a number of static store locations around the town.

The tour didn’t go entirely to plan when on the very first night the sleigh suffered a technical breakdown.

However, thanks to social media the Rotary team was able to let residents know, with engineers going to work repairing the fault to the sleigh’s lights and music.

Tameside Rotary President Angela Robbins said: “We were stuck in the dark and rain for 45 minutes but we are always very careful to point out that the timetable is subject to change through weather, lack of volunteers or unforeseen circumstances such as a breakdown.

“When that happens we are just as disappointed as everyone else of course. However, the good news is we raised £8,000, our best year yet and that will go to local charities and organisations that apply for funding and will be given out in the summer.”

Tameside Rotary had extra helpers this year that hadn’t been on the collection before including four local councillors who just came forward and Rotary ‘friends’.

Angela added: “We especially thank those people as they made the whole thing possible.”

Volunteer Andrea Graham added: “I would definitely recommend volunteering, it gets you into the Christmas spirit seeing all the excited children and saying thank you and Merry Christmas to strangers, not to mention meeting the Santa team who are all so friendly and welcoming.”
