Armed Forces personnel past or present are invited to get green fingered and develop their garden knowledge as part of a Tameside project.

Spaces are now available for the Plot to Plate summer programme, which is designed to boost a variety of skills and tackle loneliness amongst personnel.

For three hours per week, veterans, those still serving, reservists and family members can take part in the gardening scheme at DB Garden Nurseries in Hyde.

The project is a collaboration between Tameside Council, Curzon Ashton Community Foundation and Tameside Armed Services Community (TASC).

Once the 10-week programme has ended, participants can use their new horticulture skills at the Denton Allotments, run by Tameside Armed Services Community.

Plot to Plate runs for 10 weeks every spring, summer and autumn up until spring 2023, all thanks to The Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust. The course starts at 10am and ends at 1pm, every Wednesday for ten weeks.

The initiative has already helped local Armed Forces personnel gain new skills which some have taken into new careers.

Emma Varnam, Tameside Council assistant director of Operations and Neighbourhoods, said: “The Plot to Plate programme has managed to create new lasting relationships for people within the Armed Forces community. Through this scheme, they can also find what other Armed Forces programmes are being run in the local area, including a veterans football team and cookery classes.

“If you are a veteran, still serving or reservist you can take part. Once you have taken a single session, you are then welcome to bring family members such as your partner or your children.”
