Stockport Grammar students make the grade

Stockport Grammar School has released its new results for its A-Level students and is celebrating some outstanding achievements.

Students are now being given the grades estimated by their teachers, rather than by a controversial algorithm, following a government U-turn - after 40 per cent of A-level results were downgraded by exams regulator Ofqual, which used a formula based on schools' prior grades. It follows exams being cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This now means that the Buxton Road school - which has a number of students who live in the High Peak and Tameside - can reveal that 86 per cent of its students received A* to B grades.

Stockport Grammar also say a number of students are heading to prestigious universities across the country, including Cambridge, UCL, St Andrews, Bristol, Durham, Nottingham and Manchester.

Headmaster Dr Paul Owen said: "I am hugely impressed by the hard work of our A-level students throughout their time at SGS and particularly in these last few difficult months.

"Their commitment and the dedication of their teachers has enabled them to develop their talents to the full, achieving the highest academic standards and, through their support for the SGS community, becoming role models for the younger pupils."

Jamie Carson said he is delighted with his 4 A*s in English Literature, French, German and Mathematics. He's looking forward to studying Languages at Cambridge University. Model United Nations and Debating Competitions are amongst the activities Jamie has enjoyed at the school.

He will be joining Eve Gibbons at Cambridge University. Eve will be studying Veterinary Science following her 2 A*s in Chemistry and Mathematics, A in Biology and A* in her EPQ.

Awais Khan, from Tameside, joined Stockport Grammar School at Sixth Form level and is now looking forward to studying Medicine at Manchester University. He described achieving two A*s in Chemistry and Mathematics and an A in Biology as "an amazing feeling".

Awais said he enjoyed debating society, leading faith assemblies and the mock trial activities. He added that "what stands out about SGS is the support – there’s always a member of staff available to help you."
