Stockport Grammar praises GCSE students after 'incredibly difficult' year

Stockport Grammar School gives a pat on the back to pupils receiving their GCSE results after an ‘incredibly difficult’ year.

Coronavirus saw exam-based grading cancelled for the second year and replaced by teacher assessed grades. Though teachers award their student’s marks, they are held to the national standard and approved and awarded by the exam board.

The Stockport school, which has students from Tameside and High Peak, reports 27% of its student’s results are Grade 9. Over 76% are Grade 9, 8 and 7.

Head master, Dr Paul Owen, added: “I am delighted by the success of our GCSE pupils. Their hard work and determination are reflected in these results and gives them a strong foundation for further study.

“Supported by their teachers, they have shown academic ambition and resilience in incredibly difficult circumstances and have continued to take opportunities to develop their wider talents.

“I am immensely proud of them. We look forward to welcoming back the large majority of our pupils into the Sixth Form at SGS.”

One of the student’s celebrating their success is Joseph Eaton. He received 12 Grade 9’s and is going on to start A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Spanish.

He said: “Thank you to my teachers. They are so supportive and encourage you to try lots of different things.”

In addition to his GCSEs, Joseph has been completing his Duke of Edinburgh and Chemistry CREST.

Peter Walker, another pupil from the borough, is part of clubs in computers and coding, creative writing and archery. However, he still found the time to study and received nine Grade 9’s and 2 Grade 8’s.

He praised the teachers for ‘making sure everyone knows what they’re doing’.
