Stalybridge set to welcome outdoor food and drink market

Armentieres Square in Stalybridge will play host to a food and drink market to welcome shoppers back to the town as restrictions ease.

The council has been allocated a grant from the ‘Welcome Back Fund’ which is designed to encourage tourism.

‘Foodie Friday’ as it’s going to be known will be a monthly event that the council say will “add an extra flavour to Stalybridge.”

Calls for a food market, similar to that seen in Altrincham, have been made for years in Stalybridge and now the council is taking the first steps towards its own version.

It will take place once a month and begin in the afternoon, with stalls offering food and drink with live entertainment.

Cllr Eleanor Wills, who is leading the town-centre work in Stalybridge said: “Foodie Friday is a new monthly event that will add an extra flavour to Stalybridge.

“Starting in early summer we’ll be hosting stalls in Armentieres Square from late afternoon to early evening that offer a wide variety of delicious food and drinks – and all against a background of live entertainment.

“To stage the event the council’s Markets Service are working in partnership with Market Co, who together have organised the Ashton Artisan Market and expect Foodie Friday to be every bit as popular.

“I believe Foodie Friday will be a major success and is something that I have been passionately pushing forward. I’m confident it will benefit Stalybridge’s shops and businesses as many more people come into the town centre as well as providing a great new experience for our local residents.”
