Stalybridge dance team goes global

Hip hop dance team from Stalybridge are competing internationally to become best in show at USASF Dance Worlds.

The junior team have been dancing together at Tycoon Allstars for 10 years.

Together, they’ll livestream a routine to the judges and their global competitors. Dance Worlds usually takes place in Florida but is being held online due to Covid.

Founder of Tycoon Allstars, Jane Wood, added: “Their parents are going to come in and watch them compete, so they’re excited about that. It makes it that much more special, because it’s the people that love and care about them in the audience.”

The girls on the team spent all of 2020 training over Zoom so they’re no stranger to distanced dancing. Dance Worlds is also set to be their last competition as a group before they progress out of junior classes.

Co-owner at Tycoon, Vanessa Murphy-Wood, said: “We all got emotional together knowing it’s the last competition and shared our favourite memories.

“I’m so proud of them, especially in the past year. The team are all GCSE age, so they’ve missed out on loads like prom and exams. Lots of thing have been taken from them, so it’s good that they have this.

“We’re absolutely a family here and the girls are all best friends. One girl travels from Leeds to dance here and is now going to university in Manchester because she loves the team so much. Our coaches are all former students here.”

Tycoon Allstars also moved into a brand-new studio in Stalybridge, after losing their building to a fire in March 2017.

In the space, they not only offer recreational and competitive dance classes but serve as a community fitness and wellbeing hub.

Their newest class teaches hip hop to boys aged from 3 to 10 and runs every Thursday night.
