Stalybridge choir supports afghan refugee appeal

The Do Your Thing Virtual choir in Stalybridge have been doing their bit for charities during lockdown, raising over £9,000.

Now they’re fundraising to supply emergency resettlement support to Afghan families and children, as part of an appeal by Open Hearts Open Borders.

For the appeal, the choir performed their first live event since March 2020. The members have spent the past 18 month's meeting over Zoom and singing in isolation.

Musical Director Liz Taylor said: “I’ve always tried to pick the right charity for the right time. We've created 5 music videos in total to accompany each fundraising song.

“Back at the start of the lockdown, I chose to raise money for the NHS because they were fighting this unknown virus. Then when children returned to school I chose MIND and recently we’ve all seen the heart-breaking scenes from Afghanistan on the news, so we’re supporting this very important cause.”

Liz started the choir 10 years ago and calls it the ‘best job in the world’.

She added: “DYT is a family and so much more than I ever thought. Technology really saved the choir during the pandemic, and a lot of members who were shielding or lived alone thought of it as a lifeline.

“Every single person matters in the choir and the group has been described to me as an anchor in people’s week.”
