Schools tackle Tour of Tameside

23 schools in Tameside have completed the Dr Ron 7 Mile Challenge, thanks to Tameside School Sports Partnership and The Running Bee Foundation.

7,000 children across the borough pledged to run, walk or jog 7 miles each ahead of the annual Tour of Tameside, which begins on Thursday 13th June with the X-Trail 10K through Daisy Nook and Park Bridge Country Parks.

To make up the miles, pupils organised pre class runs, dinnertime walks and jogging breaks between classes. Everyone who took part received a certificate on their success!

Emma Toone, Partnership Development Manager for Tameside School Sports said, ‘’ the Dr Ron 7 Mile Challenge has been great for all the children. Pupils have thrived at the opportunity to take on the challenge and get moving! One school even had their dog complete the challenge which encouraged more children to run.’’

The Dr Ron 7 Mile Challenge is linked to the famous Tour of Tameside, an event by The Running Bee Foundation. The foundation aims to improve the health and wellbeing of local communities and help tackle the challenge of childhood obesity.

Emma commented, ‘’ The aims of the Running Bee Foundation match what we are trying to do in schools; encourage more people to be active, improve health and wellbeing and create a sense of pride in their community. It’s a great match and by working together on projects like this or via projects funded by the Running Bee Foundation these aims will be achieved.’’

Stephen Owen, Foundation Operations Manager of The Running Bee Foundation said, ‘’ It’s been amazing to see so many people get involved in the challenge. It’s a great way to get children moving and it’s a great achievement for the foundation to have given 7000 more people the opportunity improve their health and wellbeing by being more active’’.
