Saying thank you during Volunteers' Week

This week would traditionally be Volunteers' Week in the UK – a week in which we celebrate the volunteers who give so much to our communities.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is not possible of course to go ahead with many of the events and promotions held to celebrate the invaluable work of volunteers around this time.

So instead of the traditional celebration, the week is being used to say a big 'Thank You' to all the people who’ve volunteered at this extraordinary time.

Locally, Action Together have received an unprecedented response to their call for emergency coronavirus volunteers across Tameside, Oldham and Rochdale, and will be thanking all of their volunteers throughout the week.

You can join by thanking volunteers on social media using the hashtag #WeActTogether. They will also be sharing their stories on their social media accounts, and showing what they’re doing to support our communities.

Action Together would like to say a special Thank You to all their members, groups, partners and charities who give their time, effort and skills to volunteering.

Meanwhile, Citizens Advice Tameside wants to thank volunteers for their contribution - not only during this exceptional time, but throughout the year.

Thirty-six volunteers at Citizens Advice Tameside contributed 3,196 hours over 2019/20.

In the last year, Citizens Advice Tameside has helped 4,649 people with 19,856 problems - such as debt, housing, benefit and employment issues. They have recorded more than £2.5 million generated gains in Tameside from our advice work.

Monica Dey, Volunteer Adviser at Citizens Advice Tameside, said: "I wanted to volunteer with the Citizens Advice Bureau because I felt utterly helpless about was happening to the forgotten, and most vulnerable in our society. Becoming a Volunteer Client Advisor allowed me to channel my upset and anger into action, and help those people who need it the most.

"Through my volunteering, I have helped people from simply signposting them to an appropriate service; to appealing welfare decisions; to understanding what they can do when their landlord is trying to evict them to. My volunteering at the CAB makes me feel like I am at least effectively responding to imbalances in society’s structure.

"Volunteering at the CAB has been one of the most valuable experiences so far in my life."

Willow Wood Hospice also has more than 600 volunteers and is sharing stories of how they make a vital contribution to its work.

Meanwhile, local mental health charity Tameside, Oldham and Glossop Mind is also paying tribute to their volunteers.

Meanwhile, Denton Town Team - otherwise known as Discover Denton - has said thank you to everyone who volunteers in the town.
