Rev David Warner: Playing our part in history

Enjoying your new freedom? If anyone had said three months ago that we’d now get excited or nervous at the thought of visiting exotic places like the supermarket we’d never have believed them.

As lockdown has changed, so have our freedoms. Being locked down was simple enough - everything seemed to close overnight and we had to get used to it.

Then there were the weeks of coping with that - and it was a challenge for everyone in different ways - for those working at home, those who’d been furloughed, those looking after their children 24/7, and those scared about the future of businesses, health and family members.

Now we’re in a new phase that feels much more scary, because it requires so much more thought and consideration: do we need to go out? How often? Is it safe to send children back to school, or to reopen businesses?

Human beings are resourceful, and we are good at adjusting to circumstances, but we seem to easily lose our grip on things we used to take for granted.

I suspect all of us are in the middle of dealing with the past few weeks and the events we’ve been part of - people will read about this time in history books, and we were there.

What we mustn’t move on from, mustn’t take for granted is what really has changed - the realisation that our neighbours really do care about us, the knowledge of which roles, while often poorly rewarded, are absolutely vital for the functioning of our society, and simply the most important things: family, friends, safety and security.

We are genuinely all still in this together, and we need to hold onto that - we need to hold on to each other (well, socially distanced holding-on, but you know what I mean) and make sure no-one gets left behind. Mossley has coped admirably with lockdown and will work and flourish again, and when the history books are written, let’s take pride in where we were, and what we contributed.
