Rev David Warner column: In praise of our schools

In his latest column for us, the Vicar of Mossley Reverend David Warner - who is a governor at three primary schools - hails the way schools have adapted during the coronavirus pandemic ahead of all pupils returning on Monday.

Did you enjoy school? I have to confess that I didn’t really - I’ve always been a bit reluctant to sit down and concentrate, and it was worse when I was younger!

My brother was naturally good at most subjects, but I struggled with things like science and maths, and it coloured a lot of my experience.

I’m hugely lucky to spend much of my time supporting schools as part of my job - I’m a governor at three primary schools, and a keen visitor to others, as well as being fortunate in spending time at Mossley Hollins when there is some learning I can assist with.

I’m constantly amazed at the work done by our schools - the miracles done each and every day and the astonishing achievements of children who can do so much when they’re supported so well.

The past few months have been a huge struggle for our children, and also for our schools.

They have had to learn new ways of doing things, and suffered so much from not being able to meet together each day - many families will have encountered real stress from home-schooling, and we hope this is now something of the past.

As our schools come together again on Monday, let’s pray for their whole communities - the children, families, staff and all involved - a school is a microcosm of our wider community: it’s a place where everyone works together for the common good of all, where everyone can find their niche, and know their talents, personality and character celebrated.

A school is a place of safety, challenge and encouragement for our youngsters, and perhaps now we can be properly grateful for them, and the work they do.

Reverend David Warner, Vicar of Mossley
