Rev David Warner column: Celebrating Whitsuntide

In his latest column for us, the Vicar of Mossley, Rev David Warner, reflects on how the parish will be marking Whit Friday differently this year.

On June 4 we would have been celebrating Whit Friday... it’s sad we can’t do this in the usual way, but we’re encouraging people to share photos and videos (which they have permission for) from years past, so we can recall this special event and also start to get ourselves ready for a massive celebration on Whit Friday, May 28, 2021!

One of the saddest parts of the cancellation of Whit Friday is the loss for this year of the band contest.

Since I came here in 2016 this has become a massive part of the day for me and my family.

The bands aren’t able to rehearse together at present, though they’re finding lots of ways to be together, thanks to technology.

So many clubs, bands, charities and societies, (not to mention churches) are unable to meet face-to-face as usual at present, and this puts all kinds of stress on people who are being denied the support and fellowship they usually enjoy - we hope for a swift return to whatever ‘normal’ will be, and that all our cherished bands, groups and others will soon be able to be together again.

For this year, why not have a (socially distanced) garden party, listen to some brass music and enjoy a celebration with neighbours?

Every day continues to bring new challenges and stresses for all of us - please get in touch if there’s something you think we can help with or support, please telephone, 01457 237667 or email vicarofmossley@gmail.com.
