Residents evacuated after 'suspicious item' found in garden

Residents were evacuated and bomb disposal experts were called after a 'suspicious item' was found in a garden in Ashton.

Greater Manchester Police's Tameside North and East team said at around 6.30pm on Sunday evening (28 February) that the device was found on Connery Crescent.

They said: "A cordon is currently in place and residents are being evacuated as a precaution following a report of a suspicious item found in a garden on Connery Crescent in Ashton-under-Lyne.

"Officers were called this afternoon and are currently in attendance. Bomb disposal experts are on their way to the scene."

A spokesperson for GMP later said the item was moved by bomb disposal (EOD) to North Wales to be destroyed and all evacuated residents were allowed back in their homes at around 9.45pm, when the cordon was also lifted.
