Rayner tipped for new role

Ashton's Angela Rayner has been named in a list of front runners tipped to become the Labour Party's next Deputy Chair.

As MP for Ashton, Droylsden and Failsworth, Angela has enjoyed a meteoric rise in her career since first being elected to represent the constituency four years ago following the retirement of previous Labour MP David Heyes.

She has served in the Shadow Cabinet under leader Jeremy Corbyn as Shadow Secretary of State for Education since 2016.

Others tipped for the job include Dawn Butler, Rebecca Long-Bailey and Jess Philips, with Angela Rayner already previously spoken of as a possible future leader of the party.

The need to appoint a new deputy chair follows the announcement by Tom Watson that he was stepping down and would not stand to become an MP in December’s election.

Tom Watson attributed his ‘cure’ from diabetes and dramatic weight loss to the Pioppi Diet pioneered by Dr Aseem Malhottra - himself from Tameside.
