Police investigating robberies at Droylsden post office

Police are investigating two robberies at a post office in Droylsden earlier this month and have released CCTV of a man they would like to speak to.

The first happened at around 9.50pm on Tuesday, March 31, with the culprit smashing a glass front door to gain entry before returning four times over the next hour to steal a large quantity of alcohol and cigarettes. He then fled on foot in the direction of Moorcroft Street.

Then, the same man returned at around 4.45am on Friday, April 3, this time wrapped in a duvet, again stealing alcohol and cigarettes.

Kassh Iqbal, Postmaster and owner of the store on Manchester Road, told the Tameside Reporter that that fixing the damage and replacing the stolen stock will cost an estimated £8,000.

“After the first break-in I was frustrated but after the second I was distraught,” he said. “I didn’t have to open the shop; I get paid regardless. I chose to stay open to serve the community because people had asked me to.”

The shop has been closed since the second robbery but it's hoped it will re-open in the next few days.

An investigation is underway into the robberies but no arrests have been made.

Sergeant Stephanie O’Brien, of GMP’s Tameside district, said: “These incidents were a few weeks ago but our investigation is ongoing and I’m hopeful that releasing this CCTV footage will assist us with our enquiries by bringing new information to light.

“The robberies have forced the closure of both the post office and the shop which it is situated within. This has left the victim devastated and had a massive impact on local residents who are now unable to access many post office services.

“Our enquiries have led us to believe that the robberies are linked and that the man in this footage could assist us with our enquiries so I would like to appeal to anyone who can help us identify him or has any other information to contact us without delay.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 5889 quoting 2474 of 31/03/20 or the independent charity – Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
