Opening date for Ashton Interchange 'under review'

Transport bosses have confirmed that the opening date for the new Ashton-under-Lyne Interchange is "under review" amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The £13 million transport interchange was set to fully open in spring this year.

But the coronavirus lockdown has inevitably put those plans on hold.

Tameside Council confirmed last month, when announcing the suspension of all non-essential council construction work, that work is continuing at the construction site at the interchange junction because it is "key to the transport network".

A spokesperson from Transport for Greater Manchester told the Reporter: "The opening date of the new Ashton-Under-Lyne Interchange is under review as a result of the impacts of the COVID-19 virus.

"We will continue to review Government guidance and will update customers with the new opening date as soon as we can."

The new interchange - which is being delivered by TfGM and Tameside Council - will feature a covered concourse, with seated waiting areas, as well as electronic information screens.

It will have shops, fully accessible toilets, baby-changing provision and enhanced passenger security including CCTV, as well as improved taxi facilities and secure cycle parking with a cycle hub.

The development - which is being carried out by Vinci Construction - is being funded by central Government through the Greater Manchester Local Growth Deal Programme.
