NOSTALGIA: Famous actors charitable act

Thanks to the generous support of one of Britain’s leading actors, a young member of Hurst’s Centre Players could look forward to another term at a leading London theatre school.

After a successful first year at the prestigious Mountview School, Mark Hilton, of Park Road, Dukinfield, was wondering whether he would be able to continue on the three year course.

Faced with annual fees of around £7,000, Mark and his family had been unsuccessfully trying to raise the cash before an offer of help arrived from an unexpected quarter.

Sir Anthony Hopkins - best known for his portrayal of Dr Hannibal Lecter in the horror film classic The Silence of the Lambs - offered to pay the £2,000 fees for the autumn term. The family vowed to continue fundraising to cover the rest of the academic year.

Mark had already benefited from the support of another theatrical knight - winning his place at the school through a Sir John Mills scholarship which covered his first 12 months.

Meanwhile, offers of TV work were flooding in for members of Tameside Youth Drama Group who had recently taken part in a hugely successful Variety Spectacular show at Hyde Festival Theatre. Ten youngsters had been approached by agencies.

Dukinfield teenager Tracy Williams had appeared as an extra in the Granada series Children’s Ward, while Toni Ashworth and Karl Bennett had been auditioning for parts in a new series for Mersey Television.
