Nostalgia: £1 million success for Mandy

Members of the junior youth club with their circus-themed mural for Mandy.

Mandy Turner’s £1m appeal to provide a CT scanner for Tameside Hospital had reached its target - in less than nine months.

The machine which Mandy had described as ‘like a big washing machine with a bed inside’ was transported in sections from Germany to be installed in the new scanner suite.

It was a day of conflicting emotions - the joy of a dream fulfilled much sooner than expected, but also huge sadness that Mandy, 21, was not there to see it. Ashton’s inspirational young fundraiser had died 19 days earlier after bravely battling cancer.

The Duchess of Kent was to visit the hospital to officially open the scanner suite on October 24.

Mandy’s courage and determination to achieve her goal had touched the hearts of many.

Members of the junior youth club at Mossley Youth and Community Centre unveiled a mural that they had taken four weeks of their summer holidays to create in her memory.

In keeping with Mandy’s fun-loving nature, they opted for a circus theme.
