New morris dancing group to launch in Ashton

A new morris dance group which is set to launch soon in Ashton is inviting dancers to join.

The new morris dancing troupe called "Emayna Stars" will be practicing at Richmond Street Community Centre (pictured) every Wednesday evening from 6pm to 9pm once restrictions have been eased and it is safe to do so.

The troupe is voluntarily run by Emma MacDonald and Dayna Lewis, who have danced for many years and won many medals and trophies with their teams.

The dancers will learn routines and then compete around the North West on some Sundays throughout the year. These competitions build up points, which then go towards an annual championship - which are usually held over a weekend in places such as Pontins.

It is open for any age above three years old, gender and ability - some dancers have danced for years from being very young, and others have joined as adults.

Dancers are to wear matching uniform, pumps with bells on and pom poms/shakers.

Emma said: "When people hear Morris Dancing, they immediately think of clogs and maypoles however this is known as Fluffy Morris dancing or Carnival Dancing, and can be linked with similarities to Majorettes and troupe dancing.

"We are hoping to get our practices underway as soon as it is safe to do so and are just awaiting government guidance on this."

Dance leaders are fully DBS checked.

Weekly subs are £3 per dancer - which go towards funding the troupes, room hire, competition entry and trophy presentation evenings - but the first night is free for people to give it a go.

Refreshments are also available to buy at practice nights.
