New 116-home housing estate to be built in Droylsden

A derelict industrial area in Droylsden is to be transformed into a new housing estate.

Regeneration specialists Galliford Try Partnerships and housing association Irwell Valley Homes are to build 116 homes, made up of 50 houses and 66 apartments, on land bound by Fairfield Road, Edge Lane and the Ashton Canal.

The houses will be a mix of three and four-bedroomed homes and sold by Linden Homes- the house-building arm of Galliford Try Partnerships.

The 66 apartments will be built on behalf of Irwell Valley. They’ll be two-bedroomed and available for affordable rent.

Sasha Deepwell, Chief Executive of Irwell Valley Homes, said: “We’re pleased to be working with Galliford Try Partnerships to bring more affordable housing to Tameside to meet the growing demand. The development in Droylsden comes on the back of us completing affordable new homes in Haughton Green last month – helping local people in Tameside into a home they can afford within their community."

She added: “We are on-track to deliver over 1,250 affordable new homes over the next five years, helping to meet the growing housing need across our region. This includes new homes for affordable rent, as well as shared ownership. Plus, supported housing for those who need extra support to live independently within our communities, reducing pressures on health and social care services.

“We are also making significant investments in our existing homes and working with key partners including Homes England, local authorities and the Greater Manchester Housing Providers to reduce homelessness and deliver better housing options for customers.”

The new development, positioned beside the Ashton Canal, has been named Waters Edge. The scheme is being brought forward after the North West division of Galliford Try Partnerships bought the site from a private vendor.

Brendan Blythe, Galliford Try Partnerships Managing Director, said: “As regeneration specialists we are delighted to have secured this brownfield land for the development of high-quality homes.

“The development and partnership with Irwell Valley Homes will bring a wide range of much-needed new housing options to the area.”

Construction is expected to start this summer, with the first homes available by the end of the year.
