Neighbours of hotel and pub worried about football fans ahead of Euros as they recall ‘man on table with his clothes off’

Neighbours of a Tameside hotel and pub are worried football fans will cause trouble when the Euros kick off this weekend.

As England prepare to take on Serbia at 8pm on Sunday, a council meeting heard locals are worried about punters at The Village Hotel in Hyde.

The Captain Clarke Road venue has recently been refurbished. A new gym has been put in among other facilities. Bosses have applied for an extension to the hours selling alcohol – from midnight to 1am; and 24/7 for hotel guests.

As councillors considered the application at a town hall meeting, next door neighbours James Walker and Lesley Slade voiced their concerns.

They claimed they’ve had to put up with noise disturbance and had issues with punters’ behaviour. Speaking about the World Cup in 2022, Mr Walker said: “Last time, a man jumped on the table dancing and another took all his clothes off.

“There are groups of families who are coming here with their children to swim. Imagine these kids could see that. I wish you could see what I have seen over the years.

“I’ve seen people peeing in the beer garden outside. I find it so disrespectful.” Ms Slade complained about litter and noise from the beer garden, as well as smokers loitering outside.

Mr Walker claimed to have seen drug dealing, and complained about cars blocking surrounding roads.

Manager David Delaney told councillors he and his team would take objectors’ comments on board. He said any illegal activity is reported to police and that people who appear drunk are not served.

In the end, the hotel decided to keep its current licensing hours, but hours for hotel guests were change to being 24/7.

The hotel agreed the beer garden will close at 10pm to avoid neighbours being disturbed after dark. Conditions include the hotel having complete CCTV coverage; as well as hourly perimiter inspections.
