Mossley to come together to pay tribute to 'gorgeous' George

George Butterworth-Sice, who went to Mossley Hollins High School.

Mossley residents will be turning out to remember a young boy who recently lost his life.

George Butterworth-Sice was a Year 9 pupil at Mossley Hollins and touched many lives in Mossley.

George died of T-cell Lymphoma - leukaemia, and was just 13 years old - a few days off his 14th birthday.

His funeral will take place on Friday (23 July) and people are expected to take to the streets to pay tribute to the teenager.

George’s funeral is being held at Mossley Methodist Church, starting at 12.45pm followed by committal at Dukinfield Crematorium at 2.30pm. After his service, his family will be holding a celebration for George at Mossley Football Club, starting at 5pm.

His family said: “In loving memory of our gorgeous boy George Jonathan Butterworth-Sice.

“We will be doing an incredibly special route going past places in Mossley that played a special part in George’s life. We ask, if you are able to, and would like to, please stand at one of the community points to clap George on his final journey.”

George will be leaving his home at Woodbank Terrace at noon, going up Mill Lane past his primary school Milton St John’s where pupils and teachers will pay their respects.

The funeral cortège will then turn right onto Carrhill Road and go past Baden House where George attended Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, early drama classes and many parties.

At the end of the road, the procession will take a left and left again going down Roughtown Road past Mossley Community Centre where George had many parties and attended tots, karate, dancing and Skools Out.

It will then head back along Carrhill Road past the Spice of Life, George’s favourite takeaway that generously gifted pizzas to George while he was in hospital.

At the lights, the funeral cortège will take a left turn down to Bottom Mossley along Manchester Road past George’s Nanna Tina, Grandad Chris, Great Nana Josie and Great Grandad John’s house.

Turning right at the Royal George, it will go past George’s high school Mossley Hollins. It will then go down Winterford Road along Egmont Street, past his George’s grandad’s land where George loved to play on the trampoline.

Once back on Manchester Road it will head back up to Top Mossley where the funeral cortège will pass the George Lawton Hall where Mossley Hollins pupils and teachers will pay their respects before arriving at Mossley Methodist Church.

George’s family are asking people to wear his favourite colour of pink.

They said: “Due to the large numbers expected please do not enter church until family members are seated. We will then allow many more into church, including the side rooms, and outside we will have a sound system being linked up for those wishing to pay their respects on the market ground.”

Mossley Hollins said on their newsletter: “On Saturday 3rd July, we lost one of our own when George Butterworth in Year 9 sadly passed away.

“Our thoughts and our deepest sympathy go out to George’s family and friends.

“George was a truly fantastic student who made a great impression on all those he came into contact with. He was bright, caring and popular.

“Lots of students and staff have been deeply affected by George’s death and have found it incredibly hard to come to terms with the tragic news.

“We know that many students and staff will want to celebrate George’s life, pay their respects and say goodbye to him.”

Students who would like to attend have been asked to line up outside the George Lawton Hall in full school uniform from 12.30-12.40pm.
