More success for the Friends of the Tame Valley

Friends of the Tame Valley, the community group looking after the Tame Valley and surrounding areas, have had more success sprucing up the valley and ridding it of the invasive Himalayan Balsam plant.

The volunteer group, which was set up in 2021 with the help of Denton MP Andrew Gwynne, held two events recently.

Members Chris Clarke and Rob Hardman organised a community clean-up. Volunteers removed Balsam around the Broomstair end of Jet amber Fields, and even cleared tyres and other debris from the river.

FoTV member Steve Martin also organised another 'Balsam Bashing' event, where volunteers cleared more of the species from Upper Haughton and Whittles Meadow.

Himalayan Balsam is a plant species which is so invasive that it can prevent other plants from growing unless removed.

MP Gwynne, who also sits as Secretary of the Group, is now encouraging other local residents to get involved.

He said: "I'd like to say a huge thanks to Chris, Rob, Steve and all the brilliant members of FoTV who gave up their time to clean-up our beautiful Tame Valley.

"I'm so proud of everything this group has achieved, and we really are going from strength to strength. It's inspiring to see the power of community in action.

"If you're interested in becoming a Friend, join us on one of our upcoming events. Everyone is welcome and it's always a great day out."

FoTV will next meet for a 'Big Balsam Bash' on Saturday 9 July and Saturday 16 July at 10am. Those who wish to come along are encouraged to meet at St Annes Road entrance.
