Thousands of runners take part in UKFast City of Manchester 10k

Ever wondered what it's like to complete the UKFast City of Manchester 10k?

Well wonder no more, as our sports reporter, Mark Philip, strapped the GoPro to his chest and completed the course to raise money for the Running Bee Foundation.

He was amongst the thousands of runners who took part in the event, which was held at the Etihad Campus in East Manchester.

The event welcomed approx. 2,000 runners of all ages and abilities, including youngsters who put on their running shoes to complete the 400m Toddler Trot.

The race, known as ‘the people’s race’ for its fun and friendly atmosphere, started on the Regional Athletics Track and around the Etihad Stadium onto closed roads around the local area. The last mile of the race ‘Mo’s Mile’ was dedicated to Mo Done, the inspiration behind the Running Bee Foundation and a true advocate for health and running.

Runners finished back at the Regional Athletics Track in front of cheering friends and family.

Mohammad Aburezeq from Altrincham & District AC was first over the finish line completing the race in 31 minutes and 14 seconds. Mohammed has defended the winning title for 8 consecutive years.  Tom Charles came second place with a time of 31 minutes and 55 seconds. Third place went to Adam Gamar from Salford Harriers & AC who finished in 32 minutes and 20 seconds.

For the Females, reigning champion Kirsty Longley from Liverpool Pembroke and Sefton Harriers & AC completed in 35 minutes and 30 seconds. Second place went to Carol Parsons with 36 minutes and 55 seconds. Third place went to Rachael Rozhdestvenskaya from Sale Harriers Manchester who ran it in 39 minutes and 59 seconds.

Stephen Owen, Foundation Operations Manager of The Running Bee Foundation said, “It was great to welcome so many runners and supporters to Sunday’s UKFast City of Manchester 10k – the event was a huge success! I’d like to thank everyone who ran, our supporters and partners, our volunteers and all who cheered their loved ones on. Your support is enabling The Running Bee Foundation to help projects in Manchester.”

The City of Manchester 10k is an event by The Running Bee Foundation which was founded and is supported by Sports Tours International. The Foundation will provide grants from the profits raised from all its UK races to give to community initiatives across Manchester and the North West, and help to promote health and wellbeing and the fight to tackle and reduce childhood obesity.

Manchester-based cloud provider UKFast was the official sponsor of the UKFast City of Manchester 10k for the 4th year. Their very own Wellness Coach Joe Wright led the race’s warm up and took part in the run with UKFast’s team.

UKFast CEO Lawrence Jones MBE said: “We are delighted to once again sponsor the UKFast City of Manchester 10K. It is an event that welcomes the whole community to be more active, to raise money for charity and to have fun.

“We partner with the Running Bee Foundation to help inspire as many people as possible to lead healthy, active lives. We want to get the whole region exercising!”
