Local heroes honoured by rotary for playing their part in the pandemic

Dukinfield and Stalybridge Rotary Club has recently launched its Local Community Hero Awards to publicly recognise those who have gone above and beyond to help people in their community during the pandemic.

Ian Cochrane, President Elect and Community Chair explained: “We  had initially planned to hold a Local Community Heroes Presentation at Ashton Golf Club, however, due to the lockdown restrictions we had to change this to a virtual event using Zoom.  

“Nevertheless, we were determined to go ahead as we didn’t want any delay in recognising these community heroes.”  

In all the Rotary club has presented the following 16 awards: 

• Stalybridge Junior Football Club for organising and delivering, at very short notice, more than 1,000 free packed lunches across Tameside during the autumn half-term holiday

• Holy Trinity Church, Stalybridge, for providing support to vulnerable members of the community during the pandemic 

• Stalybridge Covid Support Group for providing a helpline and delivery service for vulnerable residents during lockdown 

• Heyrod Village Store for providing support within Heyrod Village for residents to cope with the restrictions imposed by the pandemic 

• Pattisons Family Butchers for their delivery service for vulnerable members of the community.

• Five A Day Store, Stalybridge, for providing food and a delivery service for local residents including the most vulnerable members of the community during the Covid lockdown and providing food for the local foodbank

• Candolim Restaurant, Mottram Road, Stalybridge, for providing food and a delivery service for local residents including the most vulnerable members of the community during lockdown

• Raja Brothers Express, Carrbrook, Raja Bros, Manchester Road, Mossley and Raja Bros, Staley Road, Mossley, for their delivery service for vulnerable members of the community during lockdown

• Steve Barton BEM - Barty’s Foodbank, in recognition of his work in setting up and running the foodbank to help meet the needs of vulnerable residents and those suffering hardship - with added congratulations for his BEM

• Karen Blackett, Carrbrook, for supporting residents during the pandemic whilst working tirelessly as a key worker at Tameside Hospital

• Valerie Charnock for her work in keeping the ‘Honesty Shed’ in Carrbrook Village stocked with homemade soups, vegetables, fruit, homemade jams, cakes, books, magazines and homemade meals throughout the pandemic. She has worked into the night preparing meals and food to place in the shed for others and she has given all monies donated to the RNLI  

• Katie Wharmby of Hairess Hair Salon on Mottram Road in Stalybridge for helping to meet the needs of customers wanting to trim/colour their hair during lockdown

• Danny Power, Carrbrook, for providing entertainment in Carrbrook Village during lockdown

• Cllr David Sweeton for his unselfish work in volunteering for Tameside East Foodbank

• Cllr Jan Jackson for her work in supporting a wide range of local community groups and local residents during the pandemic . 

The club also surprised the Civic Mayor of Tameside Cllr Janet Cooper at the end of the awards ceremony by presenting her with a Local Community Hero Award in recognition of her dedication and hard work in supporting her own local communities.
