Liam: "I'll finish the Tour"

A fitness enthusiast has vowed to complete the Tour of Tameside after a car crash denied him the chance to complete the final race.

Liam Mellon, who is the club captain of Daddies Escape Running Club, was preparing to take part in the final leg of the Tour – The Dr Ron Hyde 7 Mile – when his car was hit on the way to the race.

Despite the immediate worries upon hearing the news, it was later confirmed that Liam and his wife Leanne escaped relatively unscathed and the pair are now recovering well.

Liam, who had already completed the previous three legs, has vowed not to be beaten and will therefore finish the Dr Ron Hyde 7 Mile on Tuesday (25th).

A popular figure on the running circuit, Liam is expected to be joined by other members of Daddies Escape and the wider public who, after hearing of his plans to complete the Tour, have been left inspired by his desire to succeed.

In the hours following the accident, social media was awash with messages of support from running clubs and individuals, all wishing Liam a speedy recovery.

And the actions of Sports Tours International and The Running Bee Foundation were also praised, with social media manager Natalie Bird (pictured above with Liam) receiving special thanks for her immediate response to the accident.  Liam tweeted: “Would like to say a big thank you to Natalie Bird and the Tour of Tameside who hand delivered me a finisher goodiebag. The support they gave me yesterday after my car crash was amazing! I really appreciate it. I will wear the shirt and medal when I complete the Hyde 7 this week.”

Those wishing to take part in ‘Liam’s Race’ are advised to meet at Hyde Town Hall for a 7pm start. All are welcome.
