Hyde running shop closes its doors

A shop, originally opened by famous Hyde marathon runner Ron Hill MBE, has closed its doors.

Run North West, specialists in running shoes and equipment, reopened one of the country’s most famous running shops at 148-150 Market Street early last year - with the site having several owners since Ron first established Ron Hill Sports in 1970.

But sadly the shop closed last week, although customers eager to get their running shoes on can still get them at Run North West’s other store in Wilmslow.

Andrew Whittingham, Run North West’s MD, said: “We have been here since January 2018 and it’s previously been a running shop for 40 years, having had several owners over that time.

“It was originally opened by well known local runner Ron Hill.

“We have had a fairly busy store, but sadly not enough to break even with the overheads of trading."

He added: “Our Wilmslow store is also the location of many of our 10K events so works well for our main customer base of race entrants."

Ron Hill MBE made headlines for breaking several marathon records and for running every day between, December 20, 1964 and January 30, 2017 - an incredible total of 52 years and 39 days.
