Hyde Road to close this weekend

The A57 Hyde Road in Gorton is set to be closed this weekend to allow work to demolish the disused Fallowfield Loop railway bridge to take place.

Manchester City Council say it will be closed from 6am on Saturday, March 7, to midnight on Sunday, March 8, from Tan Yard Brow to Reddish Lane to enable work on removing the old bridge to begin.

As a result, motorists are being advised to plan any journeys in advance.

The following diversions will be in place:

West Bound

  • Head west on Hyde Rd/A57
  • Turn Left onto Reddish Ln/B6167
  • Continue onto Gorton Rd/B6167
  • Continue onto Reddish Rd/B6167

  • Turn right onto Wellington Rd N/A6
  • Continue straight onto Stockport Rd/A57
  • Turn right onto Pottery Ln/A6010
  • At the lights turn left onto Hyde Rd

East Bound

  • Continue onto Audenshaw Rd A6140
  • Turn right onto Guide Ln/A6017
  • Continue onto Denton Rd/A6017
  • Continue onto Ashton Rd/A6017

The work was due to take place on February 22 and 23 but was postponed due to adverse weather and forecasted high winds.

It comes as major works continue to widen the road and replace the disused Fallowfield Loop railway bridge.

The £5.9m works are being undertaken between Far Lane and Wall Way to create a continuous dual carriageway, with works expected to last until the end of the year.

Executive Member for the Environment, Planning and Transport, Councillor Angeliki Stogia, said: "After the weather intervened to prevent the demolition of the bridge taking place last month, we were keen to rearrange this operation as quickly as possible.

"The work will require a road closure to make sure that it can be done safely and so, as originally planned, it will take place over a weekend to minimise disruption.

"Diversions will be in place and further journey planning advice can be found online."
