HSBC in Ashton to make banking change

The HSBC bank on Stamford Street in Ashton says it intends to close its customer service counter later this year.

The counter will become self-service instead, with machines used for cash and cheque transactions and employees still on-hand to help people use them.

In an email to HSBC users, the bank added: “With the growth in digital and online banking, the way in which our customers access their banking services continues to evolve.

“We therefore need to ensure the services we provide at each of our branches continues to meet local customer demand.”

The branch is one of few that remains open to service the surrounding area.

Responding to the news, MP for Ashton, Angela Rayner, said: “I am often contacted by elderly constituents on this issue, and they tell me the thought of carrying out their banking online makes them very uncomfortable.

“They like the reassurance of going into the branch and dealing with people they know and trust.

“They have built these relationships up over many years and they really value the security that gives them.

“While I celebrate the fact that there are now a multitude of ways in which people can do their banking, these advances shouldn’t be made at the expense of the elderly, disadvantaged and vulnerable members of our community. Their needs are just as important and valid as everyone else’s.

“I urge high street banks considering full closures of their branches to consider alternatives such as reduced opening hours or visits made on an appointment only basis, both of which would allow for costs to be cut while retaining a physical presence.”

Before the transformation takes place in August, the bank is expected to be closed temporarily.

This will be advertised in-branch with four weeks’ notice.
