How you can help to support Stalybridge Old Band

Stalybridge Old Band has joined a national initiative as it battles for survival.

Founded in 1809, the band faces uncertain times with the pandemic having prevented the band from meeting or playing since March, losing almost a full year of income.

The band has now joined a national initiative launched by Brass Bands England as it seeks to secure vital funding.

The oldest civilian band in the world, Stalybridge Old Band has a colourful history, including competing at the Great National Brass Band Contest at the Crystal Palace, as well as being the breeding ground for famous conductors, Alexander Owen and John Gladney.

The band’s signature tune is ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’, penned by Jack Judge.

Nationally more than 30,000 people of all ages play for brass bands who are used to rehearsing and performing weekly.

But present Covid restrictions mean there’s no deadline for when performances can resume.

The money donated through crowdfunding could not only replenish income but ensure that the band’s rehearsal spaces can be made Covid compliant.

With a target of £1,000, you can donate to the Stalybridge Old Band at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/bd0e335f3d7b3704d9de474a368c96d0/backers#start
