How you can help and get support from a Denton foodbank

A Denton foodbank has provided an update on how people can access food parcels and the items they urgently need donations of.

St Mary's Church and Community Food Bank in Haughton Green say it has been a "very busy start" to 2021 and the lockdown is "still proving a very difficult time for families in need in our area".

For people in emergency food crisis, food parcels now have to be pre-booked via the foodbank's phone number 07479 256 785.

The foodbank said: "You will then be given a day and time for collection, this will usually be between 3:15-4:00pm on a day the foodbank is open. You will be given an exact time, please don't just turn up.

"When you come to collect your parcel, you will need to bring ID for you and everybody in your house you are claiming for. You will now be able to access one parcel per month if you are still in need."

Donations can be made at the foodbank on Meadow Lane between 2pm and 4pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The foodbank is currently short of the following items:

  • Strong carrier bags
  • Tinned meals - stew, bolognese, curry, chilli, corned beef and vegetarian meals (tins or packets)
  • Rice pudding
  • Bags of rice
  • Tinned or packet custard
  • Toiletries i.e. toothpaste, soap, shower gel and hand sanitizer.

Donation points are also in Morrisons and Sainsbury's in Denton.

People can keep up to date with what the foodbank needs via the St. Mary's Church & Community Food Bank, Denton, Manchester Facebook page or on the church's website at https://www.stmaryshg.org.uk/food-bank.

The foodbank - which was the first to open in Tameside - is 10 years old this year.
