How to take part in Census 2021

With Sunday, March 21, literally around the corner, Census 2021 is in full swing in Tameside.

Watch out for letters that feature your unique access codes which should be arriving soon.

A census spokesperson said: “A successful census will help give the best picture of the needs of everyone living in England and Wales, and the findings will help us understand what our society needs now and what it will likely to need in the future.

“We’re expecting a fantastic response, especially as this is the first digital census. It takes just 10 minutes per person to take part and we’re expecting the vast majority of people to complete the questionnaire on their laptops, phones and computers. For anyone who can’t get online, or feels they lack confidence in using technology, Tameside Council is providing support through six census support centres.

“To begin with, advice will only be available over the phone, but if restrictions are lifted it will be possible to book a Covid-19 safe face-to-face meeting to complete the census with an adviser at the most convenient library from Ashton, Denton, Droylsden, Hattersley, Hyde or Stalybridge.

“The number to ring for help or to book a slot is 0161 342 2031. Census advice, whether by phone or in person, is available from Monday, March 1, to Monday, May 3.

“Paper forms are also available for those who want them. Full details of how to get one are included in the census letter bearing your access code.”

Operating in line with the Government’s latest Covid-19 guidance, officers will be deployed across the country to contact people who fail to respond.

They will offer help and advice to those who need it and remind people their census response is required by law.

The 2021 census is the most inclusive yet and everyone can identify as they wish.

The survey also includes questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity.

Also, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Findings from the census will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years and kept safe for future generations.

The census is a nationwide survey of housing and the population that has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941 when Britain was at war.

Understanding the needs of the nation helps everyone from the Government to councils and health authorities plan and fund public services. Findings show where billions of pounds of funding needs to be spent in areas like transport, education and health.

Charities and voluntary organisations often use the census as evidence to get funding and it helps businesses to understand their customers.
