Hot drinks for the homeless in Ashton

Ashton Town Team has joined forces with Wright's Alfresco Café in Ashton town centre to provide hot drinks for the homeless.

The Town Team had already given some support just before Christmas, providing gloves to Pauline Town at The Station to help the homeless.

In January, as temperatures started to drop, the Town Team wanted to find another way to provide support and Chair Kevin Taylor came up with the idea of sponsoring hot drinks.

“I was out at the supermarket and in the bitter cold spotted a homeless person shivering,” he said.

“Having bought a hot tea for him I thought this would be a great way to help those in a similar situation on a really cold day.

“It’s a small gesture and if others can help please do what you can to support Pauline Town with the work she does for the homeless community.”

Speaking to Val Unwin, Carol Parker and Cllr Bill Fairfoull, Kevin arranged for the group to sponsor some drinks with Wrights Café, who also donated extra drinks for the good cause.

Walter Wright said: “It’s important we look after these people on the streets, especially with the cold weather and anything we can do to make it more comfortable for them.”

Deputy Chair of Ashton Town Team, Cllr Bill Fairfoull added: “I’m delighted that Ashton Town Team has been able to work with Wright’s Alfresco Café to give hot drinks to homeless people in these tough times.

“We are all living in very difficult situations and this is just a small token that we can do.

“I’d also like to put on record our appreciation for the work that Pauline Town and The Station pub do for the needy in Ashton in making sure that they are fed and can have a bed for every night.”
