Historic donation to Ashton's Portland Basin Museum

The latest additions to Ashton's Portland Basin Museum collection recall the worst day Tameside endured throughout the whole of the First World War.

National Grid has donated two plaques from the recently demolished Grosvenor Street gasholders, one of which commemorates their reconstruction after they were destroyed in the Ashton Munitions Disaster.

In June, 1917, five tons of TNT caught fire at the Hooley Hill Rubber and Chemical Works on William Street.

The ensuing blast killed 43 people and devastated a wide area including the nearby gasholders.

During the demolition work, National Grid gave 10 laptops to St Peter’s C of E Primary to help with home schooling during the pandemic.

They also made a donation from their community fund to the Leap Children and Families Centre, Clyde Street.
