Heartbreak as Mossley couple forced to cancel wedding

The outbreak of coronavirus has put all aspects of daily life on hold, with government measures now preventing celebrations and public gatherings including weddings and funerals.

One Mossley couple has certainly felt the effects, with the lockdown meaning that their wedding - that has been in the works for over a year - can no longer go ahead.

Mark Worsnip and Catherine Eagles first got engaged in September 2018 and started planning for their special day last year, where they would be married at St George’s Church in Mossley on April 4, 2020, before enjoying a reception with friends and family at The Royal Toby Hotel in Castleton.

But due to the nationwide lockdown announcement on Monday night due to the coronavirus pandemic, the couple have no choice but to wait another year.

“We thought we might be able to go on,” explained Catherine.

“Originally we thought we could get married with a small group or get a blessing at the venue, but then it closed.

“On Monday night the church told us that they were stopping all marriages, even those with just two witnesses.

“We’re gutted, but there’s nothing we can do.”

It has been a stressful few weeks for the couple, due to the changing nature of the restrictions placed on the public in light of the virus.

The two were also set to go to Jersey for their honeymoon a few days after the wedding, but that has also been cancelled.

“We did book our honeymoon for the 6th of April - and we’re trying to get the cash back from that. It’s just been very stressful,” Catherine added.

There is somewhat of a happy ending, however, as Mark and Catherine have rebooked their wedding for April next year.

“The suppliers have been fantastic. We just gave them the new dates and they said ‘that’s not a problem’.

“We just didn’t want to do it too soon because we have no clue when this lockdown will be lifted!”
