Hattersley goes green in exciting project

Local charity Groundwork Greater Manchester have been working with Onward Homes in Hattersley throughout 2020 on Go Green - a programme which provides the local community with opportunities to engage more with nature and to further recognise the value of their local green spaces.

So far, over 165 residents have taken part in the Go Green programme - which has included practical conservation days, nature play family sessions, get growing workshops and garden clean up’s for vulnerable residents.

The most recent project is the clearance of a woodland area adjacent to the Hattersley Big Garden Project, to create a tree trail and forest school area. Local community volunteers spent two days clearing the space; removing self-seeded trees and brambles ready for a half term launch.

To celebrate its completion, Groundwork Greater Manchester is hosting a free family fun day on Tuesday (27 October) from 11am to 2.30pm. Household booking slots are required (email suzanne.walton@groundwork.org.uk to request a slot) to ensure social distancing is maintained, however households are free to use the space themselves throughout the half-term break.

Groundwork have created a free guide with outdoor play ideas which can be found on their website for those families in need of some inspiration: www.groundwork.org.uk/projects/go-green

Suzanne Walton, Community Project Lead at Groundwork Greater Manchester, has led many of the Go Green sessions.

She said: “The response from the local community about Go Green has been phenomenal. There is a real passion for improving the area and some surprise from residents about how much fun can be had outdoors.”

One family member participating in a previous fun day commented: “I have just discovered this amazing community garden in Hattersley. I have learnt how to have fun outdoors, play with friends, and learnt about insects.”
