"Greedy and manipulative" carer stole £25,000 from elderly victims

A carer from Ashton has been jailed after stealing tens of thousands of pounds from vulnerable, elderly people in his care.

Four of Adam Ahmad’s six victims were living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, one had a brain injury and the other had physical injuries and a failing memory.

After befriending his victims, Ahmad stole their bank cards and withdrew thousands of pounds in cash.

On one occasion, Ahmad barricaded an 85-year-old man into his bedroom overnight by jamming walking sticks under the door, then went out and spent his money.

The man, who had dementia and was left with no access to water or toilet facilities, was eventually able to activate a panic alarm and be rescued.

Ahmad also used the stolen bank cards to make payments towards his mortgage, council tax, gym membership and credit card bills, stealing £25,000 in total.

In police interviews, Ahmad denied all knowledge of the frauds and refused to answer how his council tax had been paid for.

The 28-year-old, of Earle Street in Ashton, was sentenced to three years in prison at Minshull Street Crown Court yesterday after pleading guilty to nine counts of fraud by false representation, seven counts of fraud by abuse of position and one count of false imprisonment.

The police have also frozen assets belonging to Ahmad. A Proceeds of Crime hearing will take place on November 22, with the intention to use monies recovered to compensate his victims.

Detective Constable Andrew Burnett, of GMP’s Stockport District, said: “Ahmad thought nothing of using funds stolen from some of the most vulnerable in society to support his lifestyle.

“He is a greedy, manipulative individual whose despicable behaviour has left a trail of misery.

“We’re pleased that, thanks to the investigative efforts of our officers, this cowardly thief is now behind bars.”
