Gearing up for Tokyo! Tameside schools stage Olympic relay

Almost 50 Tameside schools have participated in The Running Bee Foundation's 'Tour of Tameside' Olympic celebrations.

As part of the initiative, which has been supported by Tameside School Sports Partnership, The Believe and Achieve Trust and Tameside Council, two students from each school were given the honour of running with the Olympic torch from the London 2012 Olympics and handing it over to the next school.

The event ran for the entirety of last week, morning and afternoon in a relay around 49 individual schools.

Part of the celebrations marked the Tokyo Olympics, cancelled last year due to the pandemic, but which will get under way next month.

The event also linked in with National Schools Sports Week and was given the theme ‘Together Again’ - with sports bringing people together once more in fitness and friendship following the lockdowns.

With the countdown also on to this year’s Tour of Tameside athletics event, which will start at the end of the month and also encompasses schools, encouraging pupils to take part in a walking or running challenge, Mo the Bee was also a special guest at each of the schools taking part.

It is hoped physical activity will be back to normal at schools by September.
