Former Tameside College apprentice builds for future generations

A former apprentice at Tameside College is helping develop the future for the next generation of construction students.

Harrison Turner, who began his career studying carpentry and joinery, is now assistant build manager for the Ashton-based college's brand new Construction Skills Centre.

After completing his apprenticeship, Harrison studied a degree in project management at Salford University and enrolled on a management training scheme with Willmott Dixon, who are building the centre.

Now, Harrison is helping to lead a team of contractors building the new £11 million development; which is due to be completed in late 2021.

The construction skills centre will support the training of a future generation of bricklayers, plumbers, electricians, painters and decorators and civil engineers.

Harrison, a former Longdendale High School pupil, said: “When I found out Willmott Dixon would be building the centre, I immediately asked if I could be part of the team. It’s a great feeling to be working on a project for those on the same career path as me and to give something back to the college, I feel very proud.

“Tameside College has played a huge part in my success and supported me throughout my career. The teachers have always been informative and professional with a wealth of knowledge to share.”

Dean Donelon, head of construction at Tameside College, said: “Harrison is a fantastic example of what you can achieve in the construction industry if you apply yourself and take the help and support you are given by your mentors and teachers.

"It’s exciting to see him back at the college after so many years in such an important role and I very much look forward to seeing the centre complete, with Harrison having played a major part.”

In the future, Harrison hopes to go on to lead his own construction project and become a construction site manager.
