Flying the Peruvian flag for virtual challenge

Philip Butler is embarking on a Peruvian adventure to raise funds for St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation.

The Stalybridge local is virtually trekking 150 miles from the base of the Andes to the Lost City of Machu Pichu.

He’s also leading a team of four colleagues to complete the trail alongside him, namely David Harby, Chris Farthing, Chris Murrel and Paul Dodge.

The mascot for the team is Phil’s terrier, ‘Wreck it Ralph’, and Chris’ Chocolate Labrador, Lenny.

Between March 1 and the end of this month, the five of them and their canines, living in areas of Manchester, Yorkshire and Leicestershire, plan to independently go the distance by hiking or cycling locally.

Their daily distances are measured and mapped online against the path in Peru, taking the team on a virtual tour of low alpine valleys, Inca villages, ancient ruins, temples and the heart of the jungle.

Virtual views and cultural information is posted to their JustGiving page and a donation target of £1,000 has been set.

However, the team have already smashed that, nearly doubling the initial target.

All the money raised is going to directly support the St. James’s Charitable Foundation.

Created in 1992, the Foundation aims to make positive and lasting changes to the lives of children and young people struggling with mental or physical health difficulties.

Philip added: “As we all know, the pandemic is touching every aspect of our lives and for the charity sector it has had an enormous impact.

“With people’s support, the Foundation will be able to continue responding quickly and offer valuable support services.”

Passing through Carrbrook Village, locals can expect to see the Peruvian flag flying high in support of the men’s epic journey.

When the five finish their trek on April 30, they’ll be taking a photo under it to mark their achievement.

• The Peruvian flag, which has been flying over Carrbrook to promote the challenge, has at present been replaced by the Union Flag which is flying at half mast as a mark of respect following the death of HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh.
