First Hyde Mela hailed a huge success

Literally hundreds of people descended on Hyde Park on Sunday for the first 'Hyde Mela' which has been hailed a huge success.

Tameside Radio’s outside broadcast team were at the event to share and report on the fun throughout the afternoon.

Hyde Past and Present Facebook co-ordinator Andrew Richardson, who was instrumental in organising the event alongside many others, said: “A huge thank you to all who came or donated to the Hyde Park Mela event. I hope everyone enjoyed the local entertainment and the stalls providing refreshment.

“After a delayed start due to a faulty generator, we eventually got up and running.”

Everything got back on course and the event proved to be a huge hit and wonderful day out for literally hundreds of people.

Andrew praised the Asian community for initially bringing forward the idea of staging the Mela - a market with entertainment - stressing the event was not a council-organised event but one that had involved the whole community.

As well as an array of stalls offering a variety of items plus food and refreshments, there were fairground rides and a wide variety of entertainment, including singers, musicians and even a keep fit display.

Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds said: “An amazing day for Hyde Mela, and a huge well done to all the councillors, community groups and performers -  a wonderful day of Hyde coming together!”

A small army of volunteers was involved in keeping the diverse and talented acts and entertainment moving along at a pace, plus helping with security, litter picking, cleaning toilets and clearing everything away at the end.
