First Friends of Tame Valley meeting deemed a success

Denton MP Andrew Gwynne and councillor Denise Ward, the new Chair of the Friends of the Tame Valley, have hailed the success of the group's inaugural AGM.

The group has been set up to help secure improvements to the section of the Tame Valley running from Shepley Woods in Audenshaw, through Jet Amber Fields, and along the Upper Haughton and Whittles Meadows to Mill Lane in Haughton Green.

Many residents attended the meeting on Tuesday (16 February), which saw the group elect an executive committee - led by Denton North East councillor Denise Ward as Chair.

The group has the full support of Tameside Council and Landcare, and the first task it will carry out is assessing the site to understand the condition of the area and identify where improvements are needed.

It is a voluntary group and is looking for any interested residents to get involved.

“It was fantastic to see so many people turn out for our very first meeting," MP Gwynne said. "I think this is an indication of just how important the Tame Valley is to local residents.

“We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re off to an amazing start and I’m confident we’ll secure some really important improvements over the coming weeks, months and years.

“It’s not too late to get involved and I’d encourage anyone interested to get in touch.”

Cllr Ward, Chair of the Friends of the Tame Valley, said: “The Friends of the Tame Valley virtual AGM went really well. With over 65 residents involved, we accepted a constitution and an executive committee was formed.

“I’m very grateful to Andrew Gwynne for giving a fantastic presentation and am happy to say that our work has now begun.

“The aim of this group is to engage with residents to help maintain and nurture the valley, with regular litter picks and events to promote, as well as that all-important fundraising.”

Anyone interested in getting involved is asked to email either GwynneA@parliament.uk or denise.ward@tameside.gov.uk
