First ever Carrbrook Garden Competition blossoms

Green fingers came to the fore in a trial gardening competition that proved such a success it is set to bloom into an annual event.

The Carrbrook Garden Competition was designed to bring three communities together post the pandemic with Stalybridge North councillor Jan Jackson the driving force behind organising the contest.

Jan sourced sponsorship from Dukinfield and Stalybridge Rotary Club, Roy Taylor (Director at Buckton Vale Quarry) and Stalybridge North Councillors to fund the contest.

Judges Deborah Kaufmann, Judith Quinn, Jackie Chadwick and Ian Cochrane faced the tough task of choosing the winners with a special presentation event held at the Carrbrook Community Garden.

Cllr Jackson said: “The event was blooming brilliant and I am immensely proud to represent all communities in Stalybridge North.

“The event will definitely be held next year and all of the entrants in the competition have inspired budding gardeners to enter next year. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone for their support in making this event successful.”

The Civic Mayor of Tameside Cllr Janet Cooper presented the prizes alongside Dukinfield and Stalybridge Rotary President, Ian Cochrane.

Each entrant received a framed and signed certificate plus a plant sourced by Dave and Terry at the Carrbrook Community Garden.

A delicious three tiered cake was donated by a talented confectionist, Francesca Coiffi.

There were two categories this year with first and second prizes in both.

The winners were: Best Kept Garden - First, Mr and Mrs Wardle. Second Mr Robert Macmillan. Bees and Butterflies Garden - First Chanel Elkayan. Second The Bennett Family.
