Find out more about researching your ancestors at virtual event

Tameside Libraries is hosting an online event this week, teaching people how to trace their family tree.

The 'researching your ancestors' event is part of the Virtual Library Club, which has monthly online get-togethers that explore different topics and invite guest speakers.

During the ancestry event, attendees can expect to hear from historian Owen Powell about genealogical research, online tools and resources, the help that museums and libraries can provide, and how people can uncover their family’s history at no cost.

He’ll be joined in this endeavour by the team at the Tameside Local Studies and Archives Centre.

The event takes place on Thursday (14 January) from 10am to 11am. Booking for the event is free and can be done here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/virtual-library-club-researching-your-ancestors-tickets-132043582911. You can also call 0161 342 2031.

Following the national lockdown imposed last week, libraries in Tameside are closed for browsing, but these services remain open:

  • Pre-order and collect books from libraries.
  • Return of loans.
  • PC bookings - it is advisable to book in advance as there are fewer PCs available due to social distancing guidelines.
  • Home Library Services for people who have difficulty leaving their homes.
  • Digital Services including e-books, magazines and newspapers.
