Family pay touching tribute to man killed in Stalybridge crash

Philip Ogden.

A grieving family have paid a heartfelt tribute to their "loving son and loyal brother" who died after being involved in a fatal collision in Stalybridge last weekend.

Just after 11pm on Sunday evening (9 May), officers were called to a road traffic collision on the junction of Bayley Street and Bridge Street.

Enquiries established that a Ford Focus had driven through a give way section of the road on the industrial estate on Bayley Street, before colliding with an Audi A3.

Police believe that there were three other passengers in the Ford Focus who fled the scene.

A passenger in the Ford Focus - who has since been formally identified as 32-year-old Philip Ogden - was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Audi - a 24-year-old man - suffered minor injuries.

A number of moving and personal tributes - including many messages, bunches of flowers, balloons, and Manchester United scarves - to Philip have been left at the scene of the crash by loved ones and members of the public.

Paying tribute to Philip, his family said in a statement issued via GMP: "Philip was a loving son, a loyal brother and caring uncle and a proud and attentive dad to his four-week-old son with his partner.

"He was the middle sibling and was very popular and well-liked by everyone who knew him. He was always there for anyone who needed him, a true definition of a friend.

"His laid back and strong minded character and sense of humour will be well remembered.

"This news has devastated our lives and as a family we are struggling to come to terms with the news that Philip won't ever walk through the door again. He won't see his baby boy grow up."

A JustGiving page has been set up by Bradley Wilson, a friend of Philip, with the aim of raising £2,500 to help his new-born son Reggie.

Bradley wrote: "He was a belting mate to many, a family member to others, and most importantly a new dad to little baby Reggie Ogden who he adored.

"This little boy now will grow up without his dad but he definitely won’t grow up without knowing how much of a good guy he was!

"I’ve come up with the idea that if we all pull together and show Phil how much we cared for him, we can all do our bit to help out his little man!

"I’ve set up this fundraiser for little Reggie so on his 18th birthday, he will have an amazing present from everyone who mattered to Phil.

"I will let this run for 30 days then once we have a total I will withdraw it and pass it onto a family member of his who can look after it until the time is right. So whether it’s a £1 or £50 every little donation will help ensure his little man has a belting start in life."

Police are continuing to appeal for the other passengers in the Ford Focus who fled to get in touch, as well as anyone else who has any information which could help their enquiries.

PC Darren White, from GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This is a very tragic incident and our thoughts are very much with Philip's family and friends at this sad time. We would urge the occupants of the vehicle who left the scene to get in touch with us as part of our investigation.

"We would also urge anyone who may have information that can help us identify these people to get in touch."

Anyone with information should contact GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741, quoting incident number 3196 of 09/05/21 or Operation Curlew.
